Originally from Aotearoa-New Zealand, I came to the art of He Rongoā when I was at the Parihaka International Peace Festival in New Zealand, twelve years ago. Parihaka is a music festival on Parihaka Pā, a site of some of the first recorded non-violent resistance (against the British colonizers). There I met the late kuia Olive Bullock, an amazing indigenous healer and rights activist, who really shifted my paradigm to think of the spirit as an essential element of health. I completed training at her school near Whanganui in NZ, Te Kopere o Raehina.
In the tradition of the Te Kopere school, this healing work is meant to be accessible to all. There is a sliding scale for the medicinal massage that I provide, with a deep discount for EBT and Medicaid holders, as well as full-time artists and writers.
He Rongoā is a form of healing that involves mimimimi (soft tissue massage), honohono (spiritual energy work), and rongoā (botanical remedies). These forms all help with relieving sleeplessness, insomnia, muscle aches, alignment problems, low immunity, and creative blocks. By strengthening the spirit, He Rongoā aids in promoting a general sense of wellbeing.
The kaupapa—mission—of this work is the restoration of the spirit. Technique also involves reflexology, herbal medicine, and addressing specific pains. For those who prefer, massage can also be non-physical (energy) work. I am a full-time writer, and find this work can also provide creative strengthening to artists, writers, and practitioners of the arts.
Nga mihi, I look forward to working with you!
