Practitioner Highlight: Sokhna Heathyre Mabin
My healing practice has come to me through somewhat unexpected channels. I have had many amazing teachers, and certificates from masters, but my most intensive teachers have been sex, motherhood, rock & roll, yoga, and drugs. All of these have brought me into this incredible place of choosing the light! I have chosen wellness as my lifestyle but I walked in the shadows for a long time. I am the mother to two wondrous human beings, have had an incredible life, and I am blessed.
In 1983, I discovered yoga as a high school cross-country runner, and then again as a dance student at the University of Michigan. At this point, it became a full-blown love affair and I started teaching Yoga Basics in 1995 from my Brooklyn apartment. After 9/11, certification became a commodity, and I began serious study with Iyengar practitioner Robin Janis, and received my first certification in Hatha through Laughing Lotus Yoga School in 2002. Interestingly, beer and winemaking led me to become an herbalist. I made beer from 1990 until 2003, and consider myself grandmothered into many of the culture's trends. I also happen to be a natural-born vocalist, and was a touring vocalist at electronic music festivals during the 90s.
Much gratitude to some of my amazing teachers along the way: Queen Afua of Sacred Woman, 2002; Yogi Traore & Babacar Khan of Kemetic Yoga, Senegal 2003; Krishna Kaur/Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, 2004; Yoga for Youth/Krishna Kaur, 2007; Herbalist Karen Rose of Sacred Vibes, 2010; Doula training with DONA in 2006 and with Ancient Song in 2012; Sex educator Sheri Winston; Sexuality therapist & tantrica Amy Jo Goddard; Sensual mystic Reverend Goddess Charmaine; Perinatal psychologist Myrna Martin; Melissa Spamer, Aditi Devi, Laura Antelmi, Rama Jyoti Vernon, Amy Spurlock, and Wendelin Scott
*Modalities: I blend cupping, tarot reading, and intuitive guidance when I counsel people. Through my two-year training with Julia Graves, the founder of Green Tara Lily, I learned to use cupping in relation to private yoga work and personal counseling. During sessions, I also pull tarot cards to help people feel secure with their intuition, and merge Hatha yogasanas and Kundalini kriyas to create the most potent climactic rise of Shakti.
Additionally, herbalism is the perfect support as bodily systems are cleansed and intelligence awakens. I have named the plants "Plantcestors"; we eat them, breathe them, are nourished by them, and when we leave our earthly bodies we will return to them. They know us intimately. I feel plant medicine is the most powerful medicine because they are some of the first inhabitants of the Earth and have studied our decomposition in every lifetime (they also happen to be the basis for all pharmaceuticals).
*Aha Moment: I got fired from every other job I have ever had. Yoga was my personal medicine, so I began to teach it to others; I get it and it supports me.
*Credo for 2017: I AM I AM ~ everyone else is an excuse.
*Dream Destination: I would like to travel the world dancing and doing yoga in sacred places- any and every sacred place. Absolutely Bali, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Tibet, the caves of the tantrics. Really, every sacred place in every indigenous culture summons me.
*Power Colors/Scents/Flavors: Rose, hibiscus, curry, rosehips honey, cumin. I love deep reds and golds, burnt orange hues, and blues with silver in them. I love the super hot things and the truly cold.
*Theme Song: Queen Afua's "Sacred Woman" and Roberta Flack's "You Know What It's Like." It used to be "Mission Impossible" (how tragic LOL!)
*What Brings You Most Fully Alive: Nature. Fresh air, the ocean, wide open spaces, mountains, hiking. I don't like killing things- I like seeing things alive. I love feeling space all around me. The change in humidity continuously commands my attention.
